Deborah McColl and Sam Clayton
Curtis Teal and Deborah McColl

I could hardly believe it when I found this last night. A whole “album” of my 1980s Pop/Rock band “No, Darling”. Almost a decade of music lost along with a bunch of shoulder pads.

This was my final attempt to “get a record deal” as a solo artist. Jeez. It was the 80s. And I was treading that treacherous threshold between art and commerce. But I had never imagined a Plan B for earning a living, so I gave it one last 100% shot.

You know, it would make a fantastic entry tape for American Idol. But really, it’s just so NOT ME and I didn’t do it all that well. I always felt like a punk poser because I was.

But, DAMN that band was great! And I really had fun being a rocker again. I loved rehearsals in the Hollywood studios on Fountain Avenue and playing LOUD!

Band members, Curtis Teal on bass, Craig Hull (from Wendy Waldman’s band) on raging guitar along with music legend Mark Goldenberg on some tracks, Drummer and fabulous singer Billy Thomas and the keyboardist on B3 and other keyboards, is the legendary John Perlulo. On “Old Grey Dog” I THINK Larry John McNally played acoustic guitar and Phil Kenzie from Al Stewart’s band played the shit out of the saxophone.

Mark Safan wrote “Hour of the Gun” and Liza and I wrote “Desire”, “Desperate Girl”, “Old Grey Dog”, “Losing Our Love”, and “Steal You Away”. God, I think “This Little Pill” is on it too. Maybe not.
